It sounds like major work, but in practice we are talking about light strips stuck onto finished glass. What are stick-on (Viennese) muntin bars?
Stick-on muntin bars are strips fitted to the surface of a sealed unit that recreate the traditional division of a window into smaller panes. Unlike structural bars (which divide the window into separate lights) and between-the-panes bars (sealed inside the unit), the stick-on version is bonded to the existing glass on the outside and the inside.
The greatest advantage is that the sealed unit itself is left alone. Its integrity is not compromised, the window’s thermal figures do not suffer, and the visual effect of a traditional division is achieved in full. That is why the solution is also known as Viennese bars - a nod to the classic bourgeois windows with their fine divisions.
Importantly, the profiles are made of rigid PVC, which makes them resistant to moisture, UV and daily use. They come in 5 metre lengths, so they can be cut to any size for a particular window.
Why use muntin bars at all?
The commonest reasons clients and window makers reach for stick-on bars are these:
- Style and character - a fine division gives windows a classic, warm look that plain glass cannot.
- Architectural and conservation requirements - in period-style or listed buildings a divided window is sometimes obligatory.
- Proportions of large glazing - bars break up the big sheets of balcony doors so they do not look flat and monotonous.
- A coherent facade - they let new windows match the rest of the building or neighbouring historic development.
In practice they work in family houses and period-style buildings as well as in hotels, restaurants, balcony doors and large patio windows. In the flat version they also sit well in minimalist and modern schemes.
Types of bar - choosing the profile
The most important choice concerns the shape and bevel of the profile and its width. Those are what decide whether the window looks classic or modern. The range includes profiles bevelled at 8°, 15°, 25°, 30° and 45°, in thicknesses of 8, 10 and 13 mm.
The simplest way to think of it: the steeper the bevel and the more sculpted the profile, the more classic the effect; the flatter the profile, the more modern.

How to choose the width
The width of a bar is chosen mainly by the size of the window and the density of the division:
- narrow profiles (18-30 mm) - for the fine, dense divisions typical of classic windows;
- medium (33-48 mm) - all-purpose, for most windows in a family house;
- wide (75-77 mm) - for large glazing, patio doors and an industrial or loft window effect.
Keep proportion in mind. On a small window a wide bar overwhelms and makes it look smaller; on large patio glazing too slim a profile simply disappears. So pick the width in proportion to the sheet of glass.
Colours and foil wraps - matching the joinery
The profile is one thing, but a coherent result depends above all on colour. Bars are chosen to work with the colour of the window frame.
The main profiles are available as:
- white (close to RAL 9016) - the standard, for white PVC windows;
- cream white RAL 9001;
- anthracite - for the anthracite windows so popular today;
- golden oak and walnut - for wood-effect joinery.
For a complete match with the window’s own wrap, bars can also be wrapped in foils from established makers: Renolit, Hornschuch, Cova and LG. The profile then merges in colour with the frame, which matters most on windows in wood shades and non-standard colours.
The colour of the seal
Most profiles have a soft PVC seal that conceals the edge where the bar meets the glass. The colours available are:
- black,
- grey RAL 7001,
- light grey RAL 7035.
The seal is chosen to stay discreet. Dark frames take black, light and grey frames the shades of grey. Some flat models (GB 26, for instance) come without a seal, which gives a cleaner, more minimal result.
Fitting the bars step by step
Stick-on bars can also be fitted to windows already installed - the glass surface just has to be properly prepared. Below is the proven order of work. The key rule is simple: take your time and watch the temperature, because that is usually what decides whether the adhesive bonds for good.
1. Equalise the temperature of window and bars
Bar and glass should be at the same temperature. Store the windows and profiles together for at least 24 hours before fitting; the optimum working temperature is above +18°C.
- In winter, do not bring windows straight in from outside - water vapour will condense on the cold glass and the adhesive will not take.
- In summer, glass brought in from outdoors can be warmer than a bar lying in the workshop, so equalise the temperatures then too.
2. Clean and degrease the glass
Where the bar will bond, the glass must be thoroughly cleaned and degreased with isopropyl alcohol or acetone. Use a clean, lint-free cloth or soft paper towel. This matters, because a greasy or dusty surface is the commonest reason bars come away.
3. Cut the bars to size
- First cut the profile to length.
- Then cut the ends at the correct angle to the frame (for cross and diagonal divisions).
- Finally, leave equal expansion gaps at both ends - PVC moves with temperature, and the gap prevents bowing and cracking.
4. Stick the bar down
Peel the backing off the tape gradually as you bond - do not strip it all at once. Press the profile down evenly along its whole length, moving in one steady, continuous pass.
5. Let the adhesive cure
The adhesive reaches full strength after 24 hours. During that time the windows should stay in the workshop at a steady temperature. Importantly, they must not be moved or transported, because a fresh bond breaks easily.
Viennese bars - the role of the aluminium frames
For the classic Viennese effect, with bars stuck on both outside and inside, aluminium frames should sit between the panes where the bars are bonded, following the same layout.
The frame does two things. First, it completes the division visually, so looking through the glass you see a continuous line. Second, it supports the sheet from inside, stopping it flexing as the tape is pressed home. In the end this detail is what separates a professional installation from a makeshift one, because without the frame heavier pressure can deform the glass slightly.
Durability and storage
Rigid PVC profiles resist moisture and daily use, so fitted properly they will serve for many years without lifting or discolouring. One storage rule does matter: always keep the bars indoors, never outside. Otherwise temperature swings and damp in storage can weaken the adhesive layer before the bars are even fitted.
Frequently asked questions
Can bars be fitted to windows already installed? Yes, though the glass must be thoroughly cleaned and degreased where they bond. There is no need to remove the window or replace the glass.
Do stick-on bars worsen a window’s performance? No, because they bond to the surface of the glass, not inside the unit. They therefore affect neither the seal nor the thermal insulation of the sealed unit.
Can the colour be matched to wood-effect windows? Of course. Beyond the standard colours the profiles can be wrapped in Renolit, Hornschuch, Cova and LG foils to hit the frame’s shade exactly.
Do bars only suit classic windows? Not at all. Steeply bevelled profiles do give a classic effect, but the flat models (GL, G, GB) sit well with modern and minimalist architecture.
